Who are Friends of Yiddish?
Who are we? We're the same as you. We're first, second and third generation Canadians who want a chance to hear a Yidish vort and a freylikh lid. Sometimes, we almost tsebrekh di tseyn as we try speaking Yiddish and we can't always find the right word. But then, it gets easier and easier and those of us who are more fluent are always willing to help. We laugh a lot too... sometimes so hard, we can't speak any language!
Really! And exactly what kind of group are you?
In 1984 a group of 7 people who shared the vision of ensuring the continuity and growth of the Yiddish language and the Ashkenazi culture founded Friends of Yiddish in Toronto. From then, we grew and grew, and continue to attract new members for whom mameloshen is their extra gene! We rely on all our members for their continuing support and our dedicated volunteers who keep our group moving forward through their efforts with developing programs, outreach/membership, telephoning and hospitality. So, please let us know if you would like to assist as a volunteer. Your membership in Friends of Yiddish will keep Yiddish alive in Toronto!
What are our programs like?
Being true to our mandate of keeping Yiddish alive, you will hear Yiddish spoken at all our monthly programs that include films, lectures, musical events and parties. For some of our programs, we partner with Jewish Book Fair, Workmen's Circle, Holocaust Education Week and Committee for Yiddish. There is also a Yiddish conversation group where you can sharpen your spoken Yiddish. You will find our programs interesting and heartwarming. It is always wonderful to spend time with heymishe mentshn who are committed, as you are, to the continuity of Yiddish!
Do I have to be fluent in Yiddish?
Not really! We know the ability of our members to understand and speak Yiddish varies widely. Be assured, that while our ears and hearts are open to the sound of Yiddish, our programs are designed in both English and Yiddish.
What else do members receive?
The annual membership fee includes free admission to most of our programs. There is usually a modest fee for guests, which can be applied towards membership. Brunch is served at our September program, and there is a nash provided at most of our other programs. We arrange for our members to gain admission to special events, such as the Jewish Film Festival, and for trips to programs with a yidishn tam. We keep keep you informed of Yiddish activities in Toronto and online, as well as news and views from other groups dedicated to the continuing growth of Yiddish.
Friends of Yiddish meets monthly at Beth Tikvah Synagogue, 3080 Bayview Ave., Toronto. Most programs take place on Sundays at 2:00pm.
